About the hotel

The building Ny Skovlund, which today makes the setting for BEST WESTERN Hotel Ny Skovlund, was built in 1930 by Gerda and Erik Færch - Erik Færch being one of two sons of the late manufacturer Søren Færch.

Erik Færch purchased the grounds (approx. 204 acres) from Skovlundgård. At that time, Ny Skovlund was located far from the city, surrounded by large planted forest areas. Erik Færch planted heather and trees on the grounds, as it was the family's wish, to live in peaceful and natural surroundings.

During World War II Ny Skovlund was designated as the home of the German kommandant in Holstebro, in case of an allied invasion. On D-Day, when the troops landed in Normandy, a telephone exchange was established by the Germans, in the wing where the hotel suite is now located. This operation remained permanent for the rest of the war.

The location of the property was also ideal for members of the resistance that needed to go 'under ground' as well as for allied paratroopers. During the course of the war, Ny Skovlund was thus 'home' for a lot of local members of the resistance.

Originally, Ny Skovlund was built with a thatched roof, but in 1948 the roof burnt, and it was decided to put on a tiled roof, as you see today. The main building itself is built with special hardburnt bricks, manufactured at a small brickyard on Thy.

In 1978 the local authorities bought the property of Gerda Færch, whom continued to live at the property until April 1979. A year later, the chairman of Dansk Metal (a national workers' union) George Poulsen bought the property of Holstebro. In the spring of 1982, the building was finished, and ready to be reopened as Metalskolen (school of metalworking). The entire renovation and additional buildings cost 55 million Danish kroner. Metalskolen chose to maintain the main building as it was, and made sure the additional buildings were made with the same materials as the original building, and even with bricks from the same brickyard on Thy.

In the fall of 2008 Metalskolen was sold to a local businessman, and on January 1st 2009 BEST WESTERN Hotel Ny Skovlund opened it's doors to welcome guests from near and far.
